Master Shin Duk Kang - Master Kang is the founder of Kang's Blackbelt Academy. Master Kang began his journey into the martial arts at the age of nine, in his hometown of Seoul, Korea. For nine years, he underwent intensive training in the Korean schools. Martial arts became his world, as he led the rigorous life of a student, striving toward self-discipline and self-knowledge.
In 1964, Master Kang moved with his family to Bolivia, where he began teaching the martial arts, as well as continuing his own training. In Bolivia, Master Kang taught members of the La Pas Police Academy.
After two years in Bolivia, Master Kang moved to the United States, settling in the Denver area. Overcoming the language barrier, he worked to help the rest of his family to finance their move to the United States. He also succeded in earning a grant to attend the University of Colorado. While completing a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Kang still found time to pursue his lifelong love of the martial arts, again as a teacher. He founded a Tae Kwon Do club at the University of Colorado, and it’s membership grew from 5 to 200 in just one year. He also taught students of the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He opened his first school in Denver in 1969.
After Master Kang received his bachelor’s degree in 1971, he re-located to Pittsburgh. Again, he confronted the familiar problem of having to make a start in a new place. But, as always, he met his difficulties head-on. He made his own opportunities by canvassing local YMCAs and YWCAs to institute courses in the martial arts. Within three months, he was able to open his first school in Pittsburgh. It was the beginning of an empire.
Master Kang now resides in California. Our schools in Maryland owe their beginnings to the dedication of Master Kang, and his student, Master Frank Dimatteo. Master Kang is very proud of his students who carry on the tradition of his dedication to the martial arts.
